Juliet Chambers-Coe has recently been appointed Chief Editor of The Journal of Dance, Movement & Spiritualities, Intellect. She is a PhD researcher at the Guildford School of Acting/University of Surrey. She is a Certified Movement Analyst (Laban/Bartenieff) and Lecturer in Movement at E15 Acting School at the University of Essex. Her research focuses on recuperating the spiritual dimension of Rudolf Laban’s movement analysis framework drawing extensively from Laban’s unpublished work held in the Rudolf Laban Archive, National Resource Centre for Dance at the University of Surrey.
She is Director and co-founder of the Labanarium Resource & Network Centre (www.labanarium.com) and is Associate Artistic Director of The Makings of the Actor international practice research centre (www.themakingsactor.com). Juliet trained as an actress at the GSA and has extensive experience working in theatre, T.V, radio, and film including Dr Who for the BBC, Virgin Media commercials, National Theatre touring company, and as a Movement Director for various projects including several shows for London’s Half Moon Young People’s Theatre. Juliet has been teaching movement for actors at acting conservatoires in the U.K, U.S and China (E15, GSA, Drama Studio London, Jiangnan University China, University of Illinois, Chicago) for seventeen years. Her pedagogic practice focuses on the development of actors as artist-citizens, where the embodied somatic experience of the mover has real-world value for their creative projects and for personal and community wellbeing. Her research into Laban’s spiritual thinking arose out of her pedagogic and creative movement practices and informs her approach to movement analysis and movement for actors.
Juliet is an Authentic Movement practitioner (IBMT) and incorporates the role of the ‘witness’ in her Laban practice as an agent for individual and social communication and wellbeing. Juliet has several publications including Figures: Rudolf Laban in Routledge Companion to Performance Philosophy and number of articles in the Journal of Theatre, Dance and Performer Training. Through her creative and pedagogic movement practices Juliet continues to explore how our experience of the
corporeal-spiritual supports creative practice and how an awareness of one’s soma-spirituality informs the ways in which we engage with the world - in our relationships to self, other and environment.
